Why you shouldn't share flashcards with your study group

If you are a student, you have likely seen the shared Google Drive or the "AnKing" deck link floating around your group chat. It looks like a shortcut. Someone else did the heavy lifting of reading the 60-slide PDF and turning it into 40 flashcards. You just have to hit "Study Now."
But two weeks later, you find yourself staring at a card about "Long-term Potentiation" and realizing you have no idea what the back of the card is going to say. You know you have seen it five times. You recognize the font and the specific way your friend bolded the word "synapse." But you cannot recall the actual mechanism.
The reason is simple: you skipped the most important part of the learning process.

The Encoding Gap and the 50% rule
Most people view flashcards as a retrieval tool. They think the "learning" happens when you flip the card. In reality, the act of making the card is roughly 50% of the learning. I've found that when I skip the setup, I'm just memorizing shapes on a screen.
When you sit down with a lecture slide and decide how to phrase a question, your brain is performing "encoding." You are taking raw, messy information and organizing it into a mental model. You are deciding what matters and what is just noise.
When you download a shared deck, you are looking at the result of someone else's encoding. You are seeing their mental shortcuts, their specific abbreviations, and their choice of what was "obvious" enough to leave out. Because you didn't do that work, your brain hasn't built the "hooks" necessary to hang that information in your long-term memory.
Recognition is not recall
The biggest danger of shared flashcard decks is the illusion of competence. This usually manifests as a confusion between recognition and recall.
Recognition is what happens when you see a multiple-choice question and think, "Oh yeah, I remember seeing that word in the slides." Recall is what happens when someone asks you a blank-slate question and you have to generate the answer from scratch.
Shared decks often lead to "pattern recognition." You start to memorize the look of the card rather than the content of the card. You recognize that your friend used a specific image of a heart, so the answer must be "mitral valve." On the exam, when that specific image is gone, the memory vanishes with it.
If you want to avoid this, you need to know how to write flashcards that stick. A good card is one that forces your brain to work, not one that gives you enough context clues to guess the answer.
The problem with context dependency
Every piece of information you learn is tied to the context in which you learned it. When you create your own cards, you are usually doing so while looking at your notes, a textbook, or a lecture video. That context is fresh.
When you use a shared deck, you are often seeing "orphaned" cards. These are cards that exist in a vacuum. If a friend makes a card that says "What is the primary cause?" and the answer is "Ischemia," that card made perfect sense to them because they just finished the section on Myocardial Infarctions.
To you, that card is a riddle. You have to spend extra mental energy just figuring out what the question is asking before you can even attempt to answer it. This adds unnecessary "cognitive load." Instead of focusing on the biology, you are focusing on deciphering your friend's logic.
When shared decks actually work
I am not saying you should never touch a shared deck. There are specific cases where the collective effort of thousands of students outweighs the benefit of doing it yourself. This is usually true for standardized curricula where the 'context' is the same for everyone.
If you are a medical student using a deck like AnKing, you are using a resource that has been refined over years. The cards follow best practices for effective flashcards and are tagged by textbook chapter, making them a rare exception to the encoding rule.
You can generally decide whether to borrow or build based on how 'fixed' the material is:
