Language Learning: The 'Ghost Word' Problem in Pre-made Decks

Why 1,000 flashcards in a pre-made Anki deck don't equal fluency, and how context-free cards create 'Ghost Words' you can't actually hear.

If you have ever downloaded a "Top 5,000 Most Common Words" deck for a new language, you know the high of the first week. You are hitting "Good" or "Easy" on a hundred cards a day. You feel like you are finally downloading the language directly into your brain.

But then you open a Netflix show or a podcast in that language. You hear a sentence. You know every single word in that sentence according to your flashcard app, yet the meaning doesn't register. Or worse, you don't even hear the words you "know." They blur into a wall of sound.

I call these Ghost Words. You know them in the vacuum of a flashcard session, but they haunt you because they are useless in the real world.

A little about me: my name is Daniel. I'm a third year engineering science student at UofT. I work on Nebulearn, which is a tool for creating flashcards from your own materials. I spend a lot of time thinking about why some cards stick and why others just waste your afternoon.

When it comes to language learning, the gap between "I can pass this card" and "I can speak this language" is usually caused by how you treat spaced repetition for language learning.

What is a Ghost Word?

A Ghost Word is a piece of vocabulary that you have memorized without an anchor.

In a pre-made deck, you are usually looking at a word in your target language on the front and your native language on the back. Sometimes there is a generic example sentence like "The apple is red."

The problem is that your brain is incredibly efficient at finding shortcuts. Instead of learning the sound and the nuance of the word, you learn to recognize the specific shape of the text on the screen. You are memorizing the card, not the language. Because that word has no emotional or situational context, it doesn't "trigger" when you hear a native speaker say it in a completely different tone or speed.

This is the primary reason why 1,000 words in an SRS (Spaced Repetition System) does not equal fluency. Fluency requires your brain to map a sound to a concept instantly. Pre-made decks often map a text string to a translation.

The failure of pre-made Anki decks

Are pre-made Anki decks good for language learning? For the first 200 words, maybe. They get you off the ground. But once you hit the intermediate plateau, they become a liability.

When you use a deck made by someone else, you are inheriting their logic. You didn't choose the word because you needed it to understand a specific conversation. You chose it because it was card #452 in a list.

If you are wondering if pre-made decks are worth it, consider the time cost. You might spend 30 minutes a day reviewing words you have no personal connection to. That is time you could have spent "mining" your own content.

The table shows a clear trade-off. Pre-made decks win on convenience, but they fail on the very thing that makes a language stick: context.

The Sentence Mining alternative

The fix for the Ghost Word problem is a process called Sentence Mining. Instead of downloading a list of "common words," you go out into the wild (YouTube, Netflix, books) and find sentences where you know every word except one.

That one unknown word is your target. You create a card where the front is the entire sentence and the back is the meaning of that specific word.

This works because your brain now has a "hook." You don't just remember that pomme means apple; you remember the specific scene in a movie where a character was eating a green apple and said the word. That visual and auditory memory acts as the glue.

If you are using Anki, this usually involves add-ons like MPV or ShareX to grab screenshots and audio. It takes more work than clicking "Download" on a shared deck, but the cards you make yourself are worth five times as much as a generic one.

The Audio-First card rule

One of the best Anki language learning tips I can give is to stop making text-only cards.

If you want to kill Ghost Words, you have to prioritize the sound. The "Audio-First" rule means the front of your card should be an audio clip of a native speaker saying the sentence. You listen first, try to understand the meaning, and only then look at the text if you are stuck.

This forces your brain to develop "ear-to-meaning" pathways. If you only ever read the word, you will always be "reading" in your head when people talk to you. That is too slow for real life.

Why context is the bottleneck

The reason I work on Nebulearn is that I saw people spending more time managing their decks than actually learning. In the language community, people get obsessed with the "perfect" settings for their scheduler.

But the scheduler isn't the bottleneck. The bottleneck is the quality of the card.

If your cards are context-free, even the best spaced repetition algorithm in the world (like FSRS) can only help you remember a useless fact. If you are going to spend 400 hours a year looking at flashcards, you should make sure those cards represent real-world utility.

If you are currently stuck with a deck of 3,000 words and can't understand a basic vlog, it might be time to delete the pre-made deck. Start fresh with 50 cards that you "mined" yourself. You will be surprised how much faster the language starts to feel real.
