The 'Easy' Button is a Lie: How to Fix Your Review Speed
Why hitting Easy on your flashcards actually makes you study more in the long run and how to find your ideal average time per review.
If you are staring at a 200-card queue and trying to "speedrun" it by hitting the Easy button, you are probably making your life harder next week.
I have been there. It is Sunday night, you have a midterm on Tuesday, and you just want the numbers on the screen to turn green. You see a card, you recognize the answer instantly, and you smash the "4" key (Easy) to push it as far into the future as possible. It feels like winning.
But in spaced repetition, the goal isn't to get rid of the card. The goal is to see the card at the exact moment before you would have forgotten it. When you hit Easy, you are telling the algorithm that its current guess of your memory is way too conservative. You are manually overriding the math.

What average time per flashcard review actually looks like
Before we talk about the buttons, we need to know what "fast" actually means. If you are taking 30 seconds per card, your cards are probably too long or too complex. If you are taking 2 seconds, you might not be actually processing the information.
For most students using a modern scheduler like FSRS, the sweet spot for a "Good" review is usually between 5 and 10 seconds. You can generally categorize your pace into three buckets based on how much cognitive work you are doing:

If your average time per flashcard review is consistently high, the problem is usually the card design, not your brain. But if you try to fix a slow session by hitting Easy on everything you recognize, you trigger the "re-learning" cycle.
Why the Easy button is a long-term penalty
When you hit Easy, the algorithm applies an "Easy Bonus" to the interval. If a card was supposed to come back in 4 days, hitting Good might move it to 8 days, but hitting Easy might move it to 12 or 14.
This sounds great until you realize that memory is not linear. By pushing that card out to 14 days, you increase the chance that you will actually forget it by day 11. When you finally see it again, you fail it. Now the card is back in the "Learning" phase. You have to see it today, tomorrow, and three days from now just to get back to where you were.
By trying to save one review today, you just scheduled four extra reviews for next week. This is the Easy penalty. It turns your queue into a rollercoaster of "I know this" followed by "Wait, what was that again?"
Speed vs Retention
The urge to hit Easy comes from a desire for speed, but speed is a proxy for how much you trust the scheduler. If you find yourself constantly hitting Easy because the cards are "too frequent," you should change your FSRS desired retention instead of manually fighting the buttons. Lowering your desired retention from 95% to 90% can sometimes cut your workload in half. That is a systematic fix. Hitting Easy is a manual fix that breaks the statistics the algorithm uses to predict your stability.

If the math behind retention is the engine, the buttons are the steering wheel. Most of us are over-steering. This is where the UI starts to eat your time.
