Why you stop studying after 3 days (and how to fix the 'Honeymoon' crash)
Spaced repetition is the most effective way to learn, yet most students quit within a week. Here is why the 'Honeymoon' phase fails and how to fix your card creation debt.
Spaced repetition is the only study method that actually respects how human memory works. But if you have ever downloaded Anki, made ten cards, and then never opened the app again, you are in the majority. Most students stop using spaced repetition not because they are lazy, but because the system they are using has a hidden cost that spikes on day four.
I work on Nebulearn. I built it because I hit this exact wall during my second year of Engineering Science at UofT. I spent more time wrestling with card formatting than I did actually learning the material. When the work of maintaining the system exceeds the reward of knowing the answers, your brain naturally quits.
To fix the "quit rate," we have to look at the three specific moments where the friction becomes too high to sustain.
The 3-day honeymoon phase
Every new study habit starts with a surge of motivation. On day one, you are excited. You make twenty cards about a lecture. On day two, you review those twenty and add ten more. It feels productive because the volume is low and the memories are fresh.
This is the Honeymoon phase. It feels like you have finally found the "cheat code" for your exams. Because you only have a handful of cards, the review session takes three minutes. The reward (feeling smart) is high, and the friction (time spent) is low.
The crash happens on day four or five. This is when the first batch of cards you made starts coming back for their second or third review, right as you are trying to add cards for a new, harder lecture. Suddenly, you have 50 reviews and 30 new cards to make. The three minute session becomes thirty minutes. If you miss one day, that number doubles.
Card creation debt
The real reason spaced repetition feels so hard is what I call Card Creation Debt. Most students view "studying" as the act of reviewing cards. They forget that before you can review a card, you have to find the information, summarize it, format a question, and type it out.
If it takes you two minutes to make a "good" flashcard, and you need 50 cards for a biology lecture, you have just committed 100 minutes of manual labor before you have even started the actual learning process.

When you are tired after a long day of classes, you might have the energy to review cards, but you rarely have the energy to create them. This debt piles up. You stop making cards for Tuesday's lecture, which means you have nothing to review on Friday. Once the "due" queue stays empty for a few days, the habit dies.
Why Anki and Quizlet can feel like a part-time job
Both of the "big" tools have trade-offs that contribute to this fatigue.
Anki is incredible for long-term retention. It uses FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) and has a massive community. If you are using a pre-made deck like AnKing for medical school, Anki is the best tool on earth because your Card Creation Debt is zero. Someone else already did the work. But if you have to make your own cards for a niche course, the UI friction is a massive hurdle.
Quizlet is the opposite. It is very easy to make a list of terms, but the free version of "Learn" mode is session-scoped. It helps you master a set in one sitting, but it doesn't give you a real, per-card due calendar. They retired their "Long-Term Learning" feature years ago. While Quizlet Plus has a "Memory Score" for spacing, it is not FSRS. You end up either reviewing cards you already know or missing the ones you are about to forget.

Lowering the friction to save the habit
To survive past the one-week mark, you have to treat card creation as the enemy. You should never be staring at a blank "Add Card" screen while looking at a 60-page PDF.
I built Nebulearn specifically to solve the Card Creation Debt. I wanted a system that lets me highlight a sentence in a research paper or a slide and turn it into a formatted card instantly. If the bottleneck is the time it takes to type, the solution is to stop typing.
We use FSRS by default, just like the latest versions of Anki, so your reviews are mathematically optimized. The goal is to get your "Creation" time down so that your "Review" time is where the effort actually goes.
If you are struggling with common flashcard mistakes, the most important fix is usually just making the cards smaller and making them faster. You don't need a perfect deck. You need a deck that exists.
Spaced repetition is a marathon, not a sprint. The students who succeed are the ones who find a way to make the manual labor of card creation invisible. Whether that is using a pre-made deck in Anki or using AI to draft cards in Nebulearn, the goal is the same: stay in the game long enough for the spacing effect to actually kick in.
