Why you can't remember what you read (and how to fix it)
Feeling like you forget a chapter the moment you close the book? I explain the illusion of competence and how to move from passive reading to active recall.
Hello there! If you're reading this, you’ve probably spent two hours highlighting a textbook only to realize you can't explain the first page to a friend. Before we get into why that happens, a little about me first.
My name is Daniel. I'm a third year engineering science student at UofT, specializing in machine intelligence. I spend a lot of time reading dense technical documentation and textbooks. I also work on Nebulearn, which is a tool built to solve exactly the problem we are talking about today. The reason you can't remember what you read is usually not a "bad memory" or a lack of focus. It is a psychological trap called the illusion of competence.
The illusion of competence
You feel like you are learning because the information is right in front of you. When you read a paragraph about circuit analysis or fluid mechanics, your brain recognizes the words. Because the text is clear and logical, your brain assumes the knowledge has been transferred into your long term memory.
This is a lie. Recognition is not the same as recall. Recognition is seeing a face and knowing you’ve seen it before. Recall is being able to name that person while standing in a dark room.
When you highlight a sentence, you are telling your brain "this is important," but you aren't actually doing the work to store it. Your brain is efficient; it won't expend the energy to build a memory if it thinks the information is safely stored on the paper in front of you.
The moment you close the book test
The easiest way to see if you actually learned something is what I call the "moment you close the book" test.
Read a single page of your material. Now, close the book or turn off the screen. Try to explain the core concept out loud as if you were talking to a classmate who missed the lecture. If you find yourself reaching for the book within ten seconds, you didn't learn it. You just recognized it.
This gap between what you think you know and what you can actually produce is the difference between passive and active review.

Passive review feels good because it is easy. Active recall feels like a workout because it is. If your brain isn't struggling to find the answer, it isn't growing.
Why your highlights are a trap
I used to be a chronic highlighter. My UofT engineering textbooks were neon yellow by week four. The problem is that highlighting is a "low utility" study strategy. It creates a path of least resistance where you move your hand instead of your mind.
When you look back at those highlights a week later, you are just re-reading. You are still trapped in the recognition cycle. To actually remember what you read, you have to turn those highlights into questions.
Instead of highlighting "The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell," you should be asking "What is the primary function of the mitochondria?" This shift forces your brain to search for the answer before it sees it. This search process is what strengthens the neural pathways.
Moving from reading to a due list
The biggest bottleneck in how to use flashcards effectively is the time it takes to get information out of the PDF and into a system that reminds you to review it.
If you just read and move on, you will forget 50% to 80% of the material within 24 hours. This is the forgetting curve. To beat it, you need spaced repetition.

A due list is different from a "study session." In a session, you decide to study for an hour. In a due list, the system tells you exactly which five cards you are about to forget today. This prevents you from wasting time on things you already know, which is the main flaw of re-reading chapters.
When other tools win

AnkiMobile costs about $25 on iOS, but the desktop and Android versions are free. If you have the time to manage a complex system, Anki is a powerhouse.
If you are just cramming for a quiz tomorrow morning and don't care about remembering the info in three weeks, Quizlet is often the fastest way to find a pre-made set. Just keep in mind that the free version of Quizlet Learn is "session-scoped." It helps you master a list in one sitting, but it doesn't have a per-card calendar to remind you to review it next month unless you pay for their Plus tier.
How to fix your reading habit today
If you want to start remembering what you read right now, follow these three steps:
- Stop at every heading. Before moving to the next section, do the "close the book" test.
- Write questions, not notes. For every important fact, write a question that would lead you to that fact. This is the first step in how to write flashcards that stick.
- Schedule the recall. Don't just hope you'll remember to look at your notes. Put those questions into a scheduler.
The goal is to spend less time "looking at" information and more time "pulling it" out of your head. It will feel more frustrating at first, but that frustration is the feeling of your brain actually working.
