A 12-week countdown template to manage a 3,000-card deck without letting review debt crush your practice exam scores.
High stakes exams like the MCAT or LSAT are not tests of intelligence. They are tests of volume. When you are staring down 3,000 flashcards and four sections of content, your biggest enemy is not the difficulty of the material. It is the review debt that accumulates while you are trying to learn new things.
The goal of a spaced repetition schedule for competitive exams is to ensure that the physics card you made in week one is still in your head during week twelve, without costing you three hours of review every morning.

The compounding interest of flashcards
Spaced repetition is essentially a high interest savings account for your brain. Every card you add is a deposit. If you add 50 cards a day, by the end of month two, you are not just responsible for today's 50 cards. You are responsible for the interest on the previous 3,000.
If you miss three days of reviews during a high stakes prep cycle, that interest builds up into review debt. This is the point where most students quit. They open their app, see 600 cards due, and go back to rereading their prep books because it feels less overwhelming.
Rereading feels productive, but it does not stop the decay. To survive a 12 week cycle, you need a schedule that treats reviews as non-negotiable and new content as a variable.
The 12 week countdown template
To keep your sanity, you have to treat the 12 weeks as a funnel. You start by capturing everything and end by only protecting what you've already captured. This schedule assumes you are starting from zero and have roughly three months until test day. It balances the "Learning Phase" with the "Testing Phase."

In Phase 1, you are essentially building your library. This is when you use tools like the Nebulearn Chrome extension to snip diagrams or highlight text directly from your online prep materials. You are loading the system.
By Phase 2, the review debt will be at its peak. This is why we slash the new card limit. If you keep adding 60 cards a day in week eight, you will spend your entire study block reviewing old cards and have zero energy left for practice questions. This shift from creation to maintenance is where the math of your scheduler becomes your best friend or your worst enemy.
FSRS settings for short deadlines
Most spaced repetition systems, including the free version of Quizlet, use very basic math. Quizlet Learn is session-scoped, meaning it helps you master a set in one sitting but does not help you manage a 3,000 card queue over three months.
If you are using Anki or Nebulearn, you have access to FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler). This is a modern algorithm that predicts your forgetting curve much more accurately than the old SM-2 math from the nineties.
For a 12 week exam cycle, your retention target matters. I have written before about whether 95% retention is worth the effort. For the MCAT or LSAT, I usually recommend aiming for 90%. Setting it to 95% will double your daily review load. On a short deadline, that extra 5% of "perfect" memory is usually not worth the burnout it causes.
Practice full-lengths vs SRS
Flashcards are for the 'what,' but practice exams are for the 'how.' You cannot do both at 100% intensity on the same day. A common mistake is trying to do your flashcards on the same day you take a full-length practice exam. A full-length MCAT is a seven hour marathon. Your brain will be fried.

When you review your practice exam, do not just look at the right answer. Make a card for every question you got wrong due to a "content gap." If you got it wrong because you misread the prompt, that is a strategy issue, not a card issue. Only automate the facts.
Moving from creation to maintenance
As you approach the final two weeks, your job is to stop being a "student" and start being a "test taker."
If you are still making new cards five days before the exam, you are doing it wrong. You should be in the "Maintenance" phase, where your only goal is to keep the 3,000 cards you already made from leaking out of your head. This is the hardest part of studying for finals last minute, but for a competitive exam, the volume makes it impossible to cram.
