Nebulearn vs Knowt: AI Flashcards, Ads, and Pricing Compared

Nebulearn vs Knowt: I used Knowt before building Nebulearn. Ads, FSRS, collaboration, and what each costs.

I used Knowt before I built Nebulearn. Both answer the same question: how do I get flashcards from my notes faster?

They split on ads, scheduling algorithm, group study, and what paid costs per year.

Same lecture, two workflows

One weekly PDF from a cumulative class:

Knowt path

  1. Import PDF (~2 min): AI generates a draft. Quality is often decent on structured slides.
  2. Edit cards (10–20 min): Same edit pass any AI app needs. Delete slide-title junk, split big cards.
  3. Review with ads (15 min/day): Ads can interrupt mid-session. Some students tune them out. Others can't.
  4. Study group: Mostly solo. Sharing exists but isn't built around live co-editing the way shared folders are.

Best when: max free AI features, ads don't break focus, solo study, you like practice tests and video summaries.

Nebulearn path

  1. Upload PDF (~2 min): Same scope — one week, not the textbook.
  2. Edit cards (10–20 min): PDF workflow.
  3. Review with FSRS, no ads (15 min/day): Cards you miss return tomorrow. Easy ones wait weeks.
  4. Study group: Shared folder. One person fixes card 42, everyone's next review is correct.

Best when: ads break focus, you want FSRS, study group needs one live deck.

Draft quality on similar PDFs is often close. The split is ads + scheduling + group workflow, not "which AI is smarter."

Knowt's strengths

Generous free AI. Practice tests. Video summaries. Knowt Play and matching games if you like that energy (similar to how Quizlet leans gamified now).

Popular in high school for a reason. If ads don't interrupt focus and you want maximum free surface area, it's a real option.

Why I left Knowt

Ads mid-review during midterm week broke my focus. Some people tune them out. I couldn't.

I also needed FSRS and shared folders for study groups. Knowt is mostly a solo app.

Annual paid cost can run higher than Nebulearn if you need ad-free + heavy AI.

Nebulearn's side

No ads on free. FSRS built in. Shared folders. Cheaper annual paid tier if you outgrow free limits.

Tradeoff: less free AI volume and fewer game-style study modes than Knowt.

Pricing

Nebulearn: Free — 300 saved questions, 20 AI/week. Premium/Platinum for higher limits.

Knowt: Free with ads. Ultra removes ads and unlocks heavier AI. Verify current pricing before you budget.

How to decide

Upload the same PDF to both. Do one real review session on each.

If ads break your focus or you need group study with FSRS, Nebulearn. If you want every free AI feature and ads are background noise, Knowt.

I work on Nebulearn.
