Can you use Quizlet for the MCAT? (The 500-card limit)

Quizlet is great for a Friday vocab quiz, but high-stakes exams like the MCAT or USMLE break the 'Learn' session model. Here is why medical students move to SRS.

Quizlet is the wrong tool for the MCAT if you plan to rely on its free "Learn" mode for your primary review. While it is excellent for quick term memorization or a shared Friday study set, the platform is built for sessions rather than schedules. For a 3,000 card deck covering biology, physics, and psych, you need a system that tracks individual card health over months, not just whether you got a card right ten minutes ago.

I work on Nebulearn. I built it because I was tired of the friction in existing flashcard apps, but I still tell people to use Anki if they are already using a massive pre-made med school deck like AnKing. My goal here is to explain the technical wall you hit when a deck gets too big for a session-based app.

The breakdown of session-based learning

To understand why Quizlet feels like a treadmill on week six of MCAT prep, you have to look at how it defines 'learning.' Most apps treat a deck like a pile of physical cards on a desk. You pick them up, you go through them, and you put them back. This is session-scoped learning, and it is the primary reason students burn out before they even reach the practice exams.

The main problem with using Quizlet for a high-stakes exam is that its free Learn mode is built for these isolated sittings. When you start a study session, the app tracks your progress through that specific pile of cards. Once you finish the session, you are "done" with that set for the day.

This works perfectly for 50 cards. It falls apart at 500.

When you have 2,000 cards to learn for the MCAT, you cannot study them all in one sitting. If you split them into twenty different sets, you lose the ability to see how those concepts overlap. If you keep them in one giant set, the "infinite loop" problem starts. You spend three hours reviewing cards you already know just to reach the new ones, because the app does not have a global "due date" for every individual card across the whole year.

Why medical students move to SRS

Most medical students eventually move to a Spaced Repetition System (SRS) like Anki or Nebulearn. The reason is the calendar. In a true SRS, every card has its own schedule based on how hard it was for you to remember.

If you see a card about the Renal System and get it right, a real scheduler might hide it for 4 days, then 12 days, then 35 days. It only appears when you are statistically likely to forget it. Quizlet retired its "Long-Term Learning" feature years ago. While Quizlet Plus offers a "Memory Score" for spacing, it still lacks the granular control of the FSRS algorithm used by modern study apps.

The cost of a missed due date

In a 2,000 card MCAT deck, missing two days of study is a crisis if you do not have a real queue. In a session-based app, you just feel "behind." In an SRS, those cards are literally waiting for you.

When you use a tool designed for high-stakes exam schedules, the app manages your cognitive load. It prevents you from seeing 500 cards in one day by spreading the "new" cards out. If you try to do this in Quizlet, you end up manually clicking through "I know this" hundreds of times just to maintain your sanity.

Managing large queues without the bloat
