Why you shouldn't clear your flashcard deck every day

The number one reason people stop using spaced repetition is the "Anki wall." It is that moment where the daily requirement becomes a chore instead of a tool.
The "zero inbox" mentality works for email. For learning, it is a psychological trap. If your goal is to finish the list rather than to remember the material, you have already lost the battle against forgetting.
The difference between a session and a schedule
Most students start with apps like Quizlet, where "studying" means a session. You open a set, you run through the cards until you get them all right, and you are done. That is session-scoped learning. It feels productive because you see a progress bar hit 100% in twenty minutes.
Spaced repetition is a schedule. It is a calendar of when your brain is likely to forget a specific fact. When you use a real spaced repetition system, the "due" number is just a suggestion based on a mathematical model like FSRS or SM-2.
If you force yourself to clear that number every single day regardless of your actual energy levels, you stop engaging with the cards. You start "speed-running" them. You press the "Good" button just to make the number go down. This destroys the accuracy of the algorithm. A schedule is meant to serve your memory, not your sense of completionism.
Why 0 cards due is sometimes a sign of bad settings
If you find it easy to hit zero every day, you might actually be wasting time. Spaced repetition is most effective when you review a card right before you are about to forget it. If your intervals are too short, you are reviewing cards you already know perfectly well.
When your queue is always empty, the algorithm might be playing it too safe. Hitting zero every day can mean:
- Your "New Cards per Day" limit is too low, so you aren't learning enough.
- Your retention target is set too high, forcing you to see the same cards every 48 hours.
- You are over-studying material that doesn't need it.
The goal of a due queue is to balance the "forgetting curve." If you never feel a slight struggle to recall an answer, the intervals aren't pushed far enough. A deck that is always at zero is often a deck that is under-utilizing your brain's capacity for long-term storage.
Load balancing vs. cramming
The biggest mistake is treating a backlog like a debt that must be paid immediately. If you miss three days of study and come back to 600 cards, trying to clear them all in one night is just cramming. Cramming is the opposite of why we use these tools.
When you cram 600 cards, you see them all again on the same day next week. You have effectively created a "wave" of work that will hit you again and again.
Instead, you should use load balancing. If you have a massive backlog, cap the session at 30 minutes. Do what you can, then stop. The algorithm will adjust. The cards you didn't get to will still be there tomorrow, and the ones you did finish will be spread out into the future. This prevents the "all or nothing" fatigue that causes people to delete their apps entirely.

How to manage the queue without the guilt
If you are using Anki, you can use the FSRS scheduler to get more accurate intervals. This usually reduces the daily load compared to the old SM-2 settings. AnkiMobile costs about $25 on iOS, but the desktop version is free if you want to experiment with these settings.
